Prerequisite: Metalsmithing 1 or equivalent
Whether you prefer the minimalism of a single bracelet or enjoy stacking them high, bangles are a timeless accessory that appeals to many. This workshop will teach a variety of styles that you can adapt to fit your own aesthetic. Participants are welcome to work with base metals and sterling silver in many different shapes and gauges. Your bangles can be twisted, textured, stamped and/or shaped. The goal is to have fun with bangles and learn a few skills while you’re at it!
In this fun and creative workshop, Sara will demonstrate many different styles of bangle bracelets. You will be able to choose from these designs to make bracelets during the workshop, and after being taught multiple possibilities, you can develop your own unique bangle designs. Everyone will be able to design their own bangles and explore as many possibilities as time permits.
Appropriate sizing will be discussed. Additionally, participants can learn how to make their own set of sizing bracelets so that they can fit others.
Participants in this one-day workshop will learn the following skills:
- Cutting wire with a jeweler’s saw
- Filing to match ends of wire
- Soldering
- Shaping
- Twisting wire to accomplish a variety of patterns
- Stamping and texturing
- Hiding solder seams and finishing with Bristle disks
MATERIALS & TOOLS
Bring your Metalsmithing toolbox, including the following items:
- 1 foot or more brass, copper, or silver wires of choice between 8 –12 gauges (round, half-round, square, triangle and/or pattered wire recommended. Rio Grande and Santa Fe Jewelers Supply sells a variety of shapes and gauges)
- Needle file assortment
- Jeweler’s Saw frame
- 2/0 saw blades and wax/blade lube
- 2 pairs of flat or chain nose pliers
- Silver Wire Solder in Medium and Easy
- 1 Black Silicone Abrasive Flat Edge Wheel (Dedeco or similar)
- 1 Black Silicone Abrasive Knife Edge wheel (Dedeco or similar)
- 2 Mandrels for abrasive wheels
- 1 pkg each 3/4" Red and Blue Radial Bristle Disks and 1/16" screw mandrels
- Protective eyewear
- N95 or P95 face mask or particulate respirator
Optional Items:
- Brass Texture Plates
- Nylon or rawhide mallet (for shaping bangles)
- 1 or more design stamp(s) of choice that will fit on 10 ga. surface
- 4oz or 8oz ball pein hammer (for stamping)
- Easy-Flo for copper, brass, bronze
