Prerequisites: Metalsmithing 2 (or equivalent) and Professional Finishing
In this workshop you will be fabricating one bezel-set cabochon ring with your choice of either a single-shank or split-shank ring band. The following skills will be covered:
- Sizing rings up/down
- Creating a ring band—your choice of single shank or split shank
- Making a cabochon bezel setting and cutting your own bezel wire
- Setting the stone
- Professionally polishing the entire piece
- Pricing your gold ring and tips on how to buy gold will also be discussed.
MATERIAL KIT $300–$700 (to be paid to instructor)*
- Gold (instructor will be selling to students at his purchase price)*
- 8–10ga half-round 14k yellow gold wire
- 14k yellow 22ga Sheet gold
- 14k yellow easy solder
- 14K yellow hard solder
- Batterns flux
*NOTE: the Materials Kit is in addition to your tuition, and is based on current market prices—fee is to be paid directly to instructor. This fee is currently between $300–$700 depending on the size of your ring design.
Bring your Metalsmithing toolbox, including the following items:
- Cabochon for your ring (the larger it is, the more gold you will need—we recommend stone size from 6mm round up to a 10x12mm oval)
- Optivisor/magnification (#5 or #7)
- N95/KN95 mask
- Ring bending pliers
- Titanium solder pick
- Flux brush (#3 sable paint brush)
- Small charcoal block (may be hard or soft)
- Planishing hammer, mirror finish
- Ring clamp
- Rawhide mallet
- Needle file set, cut #2
- Sandpaper & Sanding Sticks in 220, 320, 400 & 600 grit
- Bastard mill file (12" long)
- Finishing wheels (can buy from instructor, or bring your kit from Pro Finishing)
OPTIONAL (studio has some to lend)
- Ring Mandrel
- Third-hand cross locking tweezers & insulated cross locking tweezers
- Bench block
- Boric acid & methanol, and jar with tight-fitting lid
